The Tricky One
The trickiest Quizified question in September asked: What disease used to be called “The King’s Evil”? The correct answer was scrofula, a form of tuberculosis that affects the lymph nodes in the neck. Only 12.2% of players got it right, while a huge 73% went with gout. It’s an easy mistake - gout was often nicknamed the “disease of kings” thanks to its links with rich diets and overindulgence.
The name “King’s Evil” comes from the medieval belief that English and French monarchs could cure scrofula simply by touching the afflicted - a ritual known as the “royal touch.” Some rulers even staged mass ceremonies for the practice. Strange as it sounds today, it shows how medicine, superstition, and monarchy once went hand in hand. No wonder this one tripped up so many of you!
