The Tricky One
July 2025’s toughest question was: Where is the largest cathedral in the UK? Only 16.4% got it right identifying Liverpool, while 34.0% went for York Minster, 28.6% picked St Paul’s, and 21.0% chose Salisbury. This was extra surprising because the question even popped up as one of our social media hints - and we thought we'd given the game away!
So why did York Minster get the lion’s share of answers? Probably because it’s huge! York Minster does take the title of largest medieval Gothic cathedral in England. If you're like us you may have always wondered what the difference between a minster and a cathedral is - well here you go. A cathedral is the seat of a bishop (cathedra in Latin), while a minster is a title for a church that was a monastic centre for mission and teaching in Anglo-Saxon times. Some churches are both (like York Minster).
Liverpool Cathedral, however, is the true giant - one of the longest cathedrals in the world, and one of the tallest, too. It’s a giant of Gothic revival architecture that could fit St Paul’s inside it with room to spare. Next time this question appears, you’ll know the answer and you can wow your fellow quizzers with the minster-vs-cathedral fact!
